George is a London-based Syrian British stand-up comedian and computing lecturer. Performing in English and Arabic across the UK, Europe and the SWANA region, George has continuously captivated his audiences with his observational humour and social commentary. Using comedy as a catalyst for both laughter and activism, he seamlessly blends thought-provoking insights with everyday occurrences. George’s unique ability to navigate cultural nuances and spark conversation is what makes him a gripping and inspiring performer.

Presenting new material at his show and the Almighty said, take this! As part of Shubbak Festival 2023, Marsm is delighted to present the iconic Lebanese-American indie-rock musician Hamed Sinno as they debuts their solo material.

After leading up the most prominent indie-rock band of the Arab world Mashrou’ Leila, the prodigious composer returns to the stage with a new project co-commissioned by Shubbak Festival and the Barbican.

Poems of Consumption is a literary song cycle that explores the resonances between Amazon-era consumerism, mental illness, unrequited love, and environmental collapse, without purporting to have an alternative or moral high-ground. It’s a portrait of Nero, a desolate working-class melancholic crying at Whole Foods while the world outside comes to a boil. The compositions juxtapose the romanticism evoked by the sound of a string section, with hyper-industrial electronica created out of the sounds of consumerism (crumpling cellophane, bubble wrap, unboxing, ripping plastic) to swing between dancefloor & aural assault.

As part of Shubbak Festival 2023, Marsm is delighted to feature the legendary Tunisian songstress for a feature live concert.

Renowned in her versatility of genres, Ghalia’s remarkable voice and stage presence have become a defining contribution to contemporary Arabic music. A singer, songwriter, actress, dancer and visual artist, her name has also been synonymous with the gift of storytelling and her spellbinding presence that captivates from the moment she steps foot on stage.

Her work is deeply influenced by her southern Tunisian upbringing and love for Arab legendary icons, which she has combined with her mystical and spiritual art and the musical cultures of flamenco and Romas of Rajasthan.

Benali has also worked on numerous international projects and has released 10 albums, such as her autobiographical musical ‘Romeo and Leila’, ‘Om Kalthoum’ and her most recent ‘In the Footsteps of Rumi’. More recently, she also founded MWSOUL Art Foundation, a non-profit establishment that aims at raising awareness by reviving and connecting authentic cultural roots through multidisciplinary arts.

As part of Shubbak Festival 2023, Marsm presents Love & Revenge: A DJ set where electro-pop meets film – an extraordinary ode to Arab cinema from the 70s and 80s.

Using the precious heritage of Arab cinema, Love & Revenge emerged as the glorious musical brainchild of Wael Koudaih (Rayess Bek) and Randa Mirza (La Mirza). For this special London show, Wael Koudaih will be taking on the stage by himself, and bring his spectacular pulsing history with him.

Whether revisiting popular songs and films from the golden era of Cairo’s Studio Misr, or trawling through the vaults to spotlight the brilliant, yet underrated regional actors from countries such as Sudan, Yemen and Mauritania, Love & Revenge has become known as one of the most intriguing musical projects from the region.

Never before has ‘watching the drama unfold’ been so exciting. Clips from these bygone movies layer with Wael’s music machines while he transports us through the drama, love, pathos, and tragedy of the reels of the past.

As part of Shubbak Festival 2023, Marsm presents the UK debut of Bahiyya, a rapturous revival of revolutionary Egyptian musicians such as Sayyed Darwish, Sheikh Imam and Zakariyya Ahmad.

Bahiyya is far from a ‘cover band’, and that’s in part what has marked their success in Egypt and beyond. Reviving some of the greatest Arabic heritage and folk music, they take both a sarcastic and philosophical approach on their own arrangements and interpretations… all with a revolutionary enthusiasm.

Layered with rich musical arrangements, distinguishable by a strong contrast of oud, violin, electric guitar, bass guitar and percussion, Bahiyya takes the listener on a fantastical journey. Taking inspiration from the 1970s student movement as well as the diverse musical influences of the band, their performances are peppered with Jazz and Funk flavours and a captivating stage presence.

Since their foundation, Bahiyya has taken their sound throughout Egypt and the Arab World performing at Al-Fann Midan Festival (Art is a Square), launching the first two editions of 3alganoob (the first camping music festival in Egypt), opening the Dayra Plugged in Festival in South Sinai, headlining concerts in Lebanon and Jordan as well as regularly performing to throngs of crowds at the renowned Cairo Jazz Club.

London’s Syrian Arts and Culture Festival (SACF) proudly presents the new album launch part for the ‘quarter-tone pop’ gurus, TootArd. The evening will be supported by the Balkan Express Project led by Tasos Stamou and an electrified folk-pop DJ set by Yamen Mekdad.

Joining forces for the first time on a dancefloor, TootArd and Tasos Stamou take us on a voyage of sound. Their 70s era-infused electrified folk music transports us across time and space, from the occupied Syrian Golan Heights to the shores of Greece. Reverberating across the Mediterranean, their sounds echo the remnants of a shared history and unlock new possibilities that no border can stand in the way of.

TootArd has come a long way since releasing their first album in 2011. Beginning with their ‘reggae-infused mountain rock’, the duo have now become iconic for their disco homage to the Middle Eastern dancefloor scenes of the 80’s. Their latest album ‘Migrant Birds’, has recreated an iconic sound where retro funk meets hi-sheen contemporary, full of pop hooks and quarter-tone melodic lines which the Guardian called “a homage to 80s Beirut disco stacked with pitch-bending percussion and joyous, earworming synth melodies”.

Opening act: Balkan Express

Balkan Express is Tasos Stamou’s most recent music project, featuring compositions that hack South East Mediterranean tunes with a Synthwave attitude.

Influenced by retro recordings of electrified folk from Greece, Turkey, the Balkans and the Arab World, as well as Krautrock and New Wave, Stamou delivers a keyboard-driven time capsule infused with live traditional eastern Mediterranean instruments, and will collaborate with qanun soloist, Konstantinos Glynos, for this show.

London’s Syrian Arts and Culture Festival (SACF) proudly presents the London debut of Bedouin Burger at Oslo Hackney.

Bedouin Burger, the brainchild of euphonious Syrian singer, composer and musician Lynn Adib and the seminal Lebanese producer Zeid Hamdan, exemplifies the power of collaboration and the vigour that is unleashed when creative minds come together in playful exploration.

As part of their first-ever performance in London together, Lynn Adib showcases a variety of Arabic dialects, from her native damascene to an enchanting Yemeni accent, alongside her unique compositions whilst playing the flutes and Zeid Hamdan goes the extra mile in exhibiting a unique selection of his musical instruments, from the guitalele (beautifully heard on ‘Nomad’) to a 1980s quartertone Yamaha synth he acquired in Turkey, up to the Yamaha CS Preface and a wide array of percussions.

Be prepared for an infectious evening punctuated by futuristic, electronic sounds, infused with classical Arab maqam elements, Levantine, Yemeni and folk rhythms, alongside ageless Arabic poetry. Listen out for some of the Paris based duo’s latest tracks from their upcoming 11 track album, mixing together timeless Arabic folk and nomadic aesthetics with synthetic, futuristic and pop-funk sensualities.

Support on the night comes from Juline, a London-based researcher, filmmaker and DJ hailing from Syria via Sharjah and playing a wide range of sounds and genres from contemporary producers and musicians hailing from the Middle East and North Africa.

London’s Syrian Arts and Culture Festival (SACF) proudly presents an enchanting evening celebrating Aleppo, its music and musicians, past and present.

For generations, music lovers throughout the region held that “the musician for whom Aleppo claps is a musician who will receive the applause of the Arabs.” Situated at the crossroads between Turkey and the Arab world, and between the Silk Road and the Mediterranean Sea, Aleppo established itself as a preeminent centre of Tarab, the musical ecstasy associated with cultural refinement. The violence and mass displacement of the past decade has placed many of these traditions at risk of being forgotten.

Over the course of this evening, presenters and performers will shed light on efforts to remember and withstand erasure, and the many ways in which creative acts of expression can help hold out against the tests of time and reinvigorate the living richness and beauty of these traditions. Featuring a short film screening, panel conversation and live music performance, the evening sets out to offer a heartfelt encounter with a people and place steeped in the love of musical ecstasy: Tarab.

Opening with a special edit of Maqamat Almasara (“Aleppo, Maqams for Pleasure”) by the much-acclaimed Syrian filmmaker Mohammad Malas. The film tells a tale about Aleppo’s music with a focus on Sabri Moudallal, a legendary musician and composer of classical Arabic music. This special edition of the film, made especially for this event, was made possible by Syrian filmmaker Omar Malas.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion on the regional impact of Aleppo’s musical life. Syrian musician and composer, Ibrahim Muslimani will join music historian Hazem Jamjoum and ethnomusicologist Dunya Habash in a conversation about the city’s musical forms, its musicians, music scholars, and musical ideas, and how they helped shape the very notion of “Arabic music” in the twentieth century.

The evening will close with a musical performance by Nawa Band, led by Ibrahim Muslimani and featuring a group of talented UK-based musicians Tarik Beshir, Martin Stokes, Yara Salahiddeen, Hanan Alhabash, and Bassel Hariri. Coming together on this London stage, they will perform Nawa Band’s 2021 album Wasl, which emerged from the in-depth research conducted by Nefes Foundation.

The performance will be accompanied by projections created by visual artist and designer Tulip Hazbar.

This event is curated by Yamen Mekdad.

A narrative-focused artist, Rasha Nahas sound has become increasingly popular both abroad, and in the Palestinian indie scene, with her mesmerising theatrical-poetic rock that is as catchy as it is introspective.

Following her critically acclaimed debut release ‘Desert’, her second/sophomore studio album ‘Amrat’, touches a sweet spot between contemporary electronica and the rawness of the old-school, singer-songwriter era. Rasha’s sound is now more defined than ever, and the album marks Nahas’ first body of work in Arabic language.

‘Amrat’ is a two chapter album, the first chapter born in city streets, immersed in a bittersweet melancholy and the cruel alienation of exile and heavily features electronic music compositions and synth loops. Meanwhile, chapter two is an anthology of songs inspired by rural scenery. With classical guitars at the core, Nahas’ signature songwriting is enveloped by tender vocalisation and a constellation of percussion that journeys across West Asia, North Africa, via Andalusia, and back to Berlin.

Driven by candid lyrics and disarming vulnerability, Rasha is well known for her captivating, unapologetic energy and striking live performances. Nahas will be leading with guitar and vocals in a trio format, accompanied by Altair Chagué (Drums) and Jelmer de Haan (bass).

The big man comes to town.

Starting his career over a decade ago, the Palestinian singer and songwriter began rapping from his bedroom. Following an impressive string of releases and singles, he came out with his first full album ‘Kazab’ in 2020. By now, Bigsam has over 100 tracks under his belt, while amassing almost half a billion views on YouTube with over 1 million subscribers following his catchy tracks.

In 2022 Bigsam performed over 50 concerts internationally – in February he will be on the road again and stopping by the capital for his first ever London show!

Opening DJ set by DJZERO – Lebanese Multi-instrumentalist and sound engineer DJZERO, is one of the new generation of Arabs in the diaspora who are mixing The Orient and The West through sound. With Jazz being the bridge from classical to Arabic microtonal scales, he explores their potential through his production with many artists such as Professor Z and Nielaa420.

Presented by The Alternative Theatre Group (ATG) and Marsm UK, Dawlat is an evening of mesmerising Arabic storytelling based on the autobiographical story of the Egyptian playwright and theatre director Mahmoud Aboudoma, followed by a Q&A.

DAWLAT is an autobiographical story of the writer, reminiscing his life in the South of Egypt during his childhood. Featuring live music , the storytelling of the girl named Dawlat transmits his nostalgic emotions where truth is mixed with illusions, and reality with myth, reflecting on a bygone era in Egypt that is embedded in the heart of the writer.

The Alternative Theatre Group (ATG):

Founded in 1989 by Mahmoud Aboudoma and Awatef Ibrahim, ATG was the first independent theatre group in Alexandria. Over the past 27 years ATG has shown numerous productions both in Egypt and abroad resulting in numerous international collaborations including Sweden, Germany, Austria and many more. The troupe is specialised in storytelling and since 2007, has had its own studio in which to develop a new generation of professional theatre makers.

About the Director Mahmoud Aboudoma:

Born in 1953 in Heliopolis, Cairo, Mahmoud played a pivotal role in developing the independent theatre movement in Egypt since the 1980s as cofounder of the Alternative Theatre Group. As a writer and director, his works include various Arabic adaptations including Shakespeare’s Hamlet under the title “Dance of the Scorpions”, “The House of Bernarda Alba” by Garcia Lorca, “The Fire Raisers” by Max Frisch, “The Dance of Death” by Strindberg, “Marat Sade” by Peter Weiss alongside the translation of Athol Fugard’s “A Place with the Pigs”. He has also written a book of short stories entitled “Thresholds of Homes” and various books about theatre practices.

On entry to the venue you will also have free access to ‘The Future of Traditions, Writing Pictures: Contemporary Art from the Middle East’, a calligraphy exhibition in the Brunei Gallery displaying the work of artists from the region and beyond. We generally recommend 20-30 minutes to view the exhibition and encourage our guests to do so.

A Lebanese born and raised stand-up comic, writer and performer based in NYC, Nataly has toured the world, opening for comedians such as Ramy Youssef (Ramy), Mo Amer (Mo, Black Adam), and Gad El Maleh and was just featured in Netflix’s “Introducing” showcase at the “Netflix is a Joke Festival: in 2022. She also starred alongside the director and actor Hiam Abbas, Nataly and is currently touring her hour-long set “I always hated you,” after debuting the show to a sold out audience at The 2022 New York Comedy Festival.

Mustafa Yasin (opening act)

An exciting new voice in British comedy, Mustafa Yasin is a been a regular on the UK comedy scene since he started performing stand up in the summer of 2018. The same year he was a runner up at the Laughing Horse New Act of the Year competition, winning the Quantum Leopard Champion of Champions award in 2019 and nominated for the prestigious Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year award in 2020. Post pandemic he was named as a finalist for the Stand-Up Club new act competition set to take place in December 2022 and was shortlisted for the BBC New Comedian of the Year award.
