Renowned oud player and composer Adnan Joubran’s compelling career has spanned the globe from Palestine to Paris and New York. Hailing from a family synonymous with the oud, Adnan comes to the EFG London Jazz Festival with his new quartet project.

Joining his two older brothers in 2005 to form the now iconic Le Trio Joubran, the Trio have gone on to release award-winning albums, and compose for numerous films and documentaries, such as the Oscar-nominated Five Broken Cameras.

Nearly a decade later, Adnan marked the launch of his anticipated solo career in 2014 with his debut album Borders Behind. Whilst paying homage to the heritage of the oud, his journey takes him beyond the traditional music, creating a unity of compositions and modern sounds to create a new musical landscape. This arresting new sound has seen him open for international artists such as Ibrahim Maalouf and Rodrigo & Gabriela.

For this pulsing show, Adnan has followed his steadfast passion to propose something different and compelling incorporating Indian, flamenco, jazz and classical influences; it is his musical fingerprint, a complex yet inviting modern arrangement. Ranging from dark and dramatic, to cinematic, Borders Behind gives space to new classical compositions, stunning improvisation and an innovative meeting of the classical cello and the contemporary oud.

The oud master returns to the Barbican in Mahmoud, Marcel and I – a show created by his son to celebrate his musical legacy.

Honouring the music of his father, Marcel Khalifé, and accompanied by him on stage, Bachar Mar-Khalifé weaves the words of Palestinian poet, Mahmoud Darwish through this iconic oud music. He says, ‘I’m crafting a music that will recompose the universe that Mahmoud and Marcel once shared; it’s these two men that I will showcase on stage.’

Singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Mar-Khalifé grew up in a war-torn Lebanon sound-tracked by his father’s music. Now a respected musician in his own right, he has collaborated with artists as diverse as techno producer Carl Craig, jazz pianists Bojan Z and Francesco Tristano and electronic musician Murcof, bringing traditional Arab music into exciting new settings.

This is event is produced by Serious and is part of the EFG London Jazz Festival running across the capital from 12-21 November.

The Sudanese-London collective, The Scorpios return to the Jazz Cafe to launch their anticipated new album “Let’s Go” with an electrifying night of funk and soul-infused afrobeat. Recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, their revamped sound combines soul, afrobeat and psychedelica that drive through the rich sounds of traditional Sudanese forms. Blending Arabic rhythms and guitar with raw Eastern funk and Western jazz, the 10-piece collective is supported by an international backing band, heavy bass, synths, horns and percussion create a sound that owes as much to Detroit as it does to Khartoum.

This event is part of the London EFG London Jazz Festival programme, running across the capital from 12-21 November.

The Synaptik and Felukah: LONDON CONCERT

Due to government travel restrictions, the Synaptik and Felukah show has been postponed to 22nd October 2021.

With the UK’s recent announcements, Egypt has been placed on the red list meaning neither of the artists are able to fly in to London for the time being. The show will however go on! Releasing their debut track ‘Nefsi’, The Synaptik and Felukah are currently in the studio working on a new song together, both which will be performed first time together in October when the two share the stage.

To anyone with a ticket for the Jazz Cafe show, your tickets will be directly valid for the new show date on October 22nd. The new show will be moved from a seated to a standing show

Tickets are refundable through Jazz Cafe, but we encourage ticket holders to hold on to their tickets as the October show will most likely sell out.

THE SYNAPTIK

The Synaptik is a Palestinian-Jordanian rapper at the forefront of a new wave of Arabic rap and trap. With a steady string of new releases, including numerous of iconic collaborations with the region’s hip-hop heavyweights, his distinctive voice and potent lyrics have cemented him as one of the pioneering artists of the Arabic-speaking world. Exploring issues such as migration and social inequality, The Synaptik has been able to take the region’s pulse and broadcast it worldwide through his infectious beats.

FELUKAH

Combining her Cairo heritage and the New York City that adopted her, Felukah is a rapper and poet whose work glides between English and Arabic. From classic Arabic musical icons, US hip-hop legends and contemporary prose writers, she pays homage to her past and present, exploring womanhood, diaspora cultures and her self-expression and was dubbed by Scene Noise as ‘the neo-soul artist bringing the Nile to New York’.

Debuting a mesmerising new project, internationally-renowned Palestinian composer and oud player Saied Silbak presents a two-part concert featuring his solo compositions, and his quintet ensemble with Palestinian soprano singer Nour Darwish.

In this beautiful and diverse programme Silbak pays homage to the landscape and trajectory of Palestine’s rich music history, from journeying through the region’s folklore classics, to the soundtracks of the 80s and 90s, as well as showcasing contemporary pieces and sounds.

Spotlighting some of the most distinct regional artists such as Sabreen, Kamilya Jubran and Rim Banna, Silbak also presents his own unique and stellar compositions. A journey through Palestinian folklore from past to present, this is a show you do not want to miss.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Saied Silbak

Saied Silbak is a Palestinian composer and Oud player born in Shafaa`mr, a city located in the lower Galilee of occupied Palestine. He began training in classical piano at the age of four, before moving onto the oud in his early teens to delve deep into the nuances at the base of Arabic music. Silbak went on to train at the Beit Almusica Conservatoire where he later taught, before studying Music and Psychology in Haifa and then completing his Masters at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He has a unique understanding of different types of music, from Arabic, Turkish and Indian to classical Western styles. Silbak’s signature sound, created through his artful ability to fuse these styles together, has seen him perform around the world at festivals and concert series in the UK, Belgium, France, Palestine, Morocco, Argentina and beyond.

Nour Darwish

Nour Darwish is a renowned Palestinian soprano who primarily focuses on contemporary Palestinian art songs that combine Arabic poems and classical western music by Palestinian composers. She has taken part in interdisciplinary performances around the world, performing operatic repertoire as well as Arabic music.

A storytelling and music performance based on a collection of stories from Syria adapted for the stage by Alia Alzougbi and Louai Alhenawi in a newly devised script and original music.

Saied Silbak Presents: Songs from Palestine

All food will be individually labelled on the buffet with the allergen information but we cannot guarantee that dishes will not come into contact with common allergens.

Led by composer and Ney soloist Louai Alhenawi, this show marks the worldwide debut of the London Syrian Ensemble’s new project ‘Sounds of Syria’.

London Syrian Ensemble is a stunning collective of eight musicians and graduates from the renowned Damascus Conservatoire. This dynamic and emotional work brings to the stage new instrumental arrangements by composers from Syria and its diaspora. Alongside featured guest vocalists and songs from Arabic folk and classical repertoire, Sounds of Syria examines the new approaches and sounds created when Syrian music is composed in foreign lands, exploring themes of longing and loss, hope and new beginnings.

ABOUT LONDON SYRIAN ENSEMBLE

Founded in 2017, London Syrian Ensemble perform on the enticing combination of ney (wooden flute), kanun (zither), daf (frame drum), riqq (tambourine) and darbuka (hand drum), violins, violas, double bass and percussion. The ensemble is comprised of Syrian musicians who, since leaving Syria, are now long-term residents in the UK, and have performed across England from London’s Southbank Centre and British Museum, to the Liverpool World Museum and many more.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

The London Syrian Ensemble (LSE) is led by Louai Alhenawi, a composer and Ney soloist who studied and taught at the eminent Damascus Conservatoire. He recently held the position of the Musical Director for the first Arabic Musical in the UK, “Umm Kulthum” which made its worldwide premiere at the London Palladium. Alongside his work with the LSE, Alhenawi also leads the SOAS Middle Eastern Ensemble and has recorded and toured with acclaimed artists including Fairouz, Shakira, Brian Eno, Damon Albarn, Terry Hall, Gabriel Yared and Natacha Atlas.

Saied Silbak Presents: Songs from Palestine [Shubbak Festival]

Debuting a mesmerising new project, internationally-renowned Palestinian composer and Oud player Saied Silbak presents a two-part concert featuring his solo compositions, and his quintet ensemble with Palestinian singer Nour Darwish.

In this beautiful and diverse programme Silbak pays homage to the landscape and trajectory of Palestine’s rich music history, from journeying through the region’s folklore classics, to the soundtracks of the 80s and 90s, as well as showcasing contemporary pieces and sounds.

Spotlighting some of the most distinct regional artists such as

Sabreen, Kamilya Jubran and Rim Banna, Silbak also presents his own unique and stellar compositions. A journey through Palestinian folklore from past to present, this is a show you do not want to miss.

About Saied Silbak:

Saied Silbak is a Palestinian composer and Oud player born in Shafaa`mr, a city located in the lower Galilee of occupied Palestine. He began training in classical piano at the age of four, before moving onto the oud in his early teens in order to delve deep into the nuances at the base of Arabic music. Silbak went on to train at the Beit Almusica Conservatoire where he later taught, before studying Music and Psychology in Haifa and then completing his Masters at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He has a unique understanding of different types of music, from Arabic, Turkish and Indian to classical Western styles. Silbak’s signature sound, created through his artful ability to fuse these styles together, has seen him perform around the world at festivals and concert series in the UK, Belgium, France, Palestine, Morocco, Argentina and beyond.

About Nour Darwish:

Nour Darwish is a renowned Palestinian soprano who primarily focuses on contemporary Palestinian art songs that combine Arabic poems and classical western music by Palestinian composers. She has taken part in interdisciplinary performances around the world, performing Operatic repertoire as well as Arabic music, and will now be joining Saied Silbak once again for the new project ‘Songs from Palestine’, debuting at London’s Jazz Cafe.

Adnan Joubran brings his mesmerising solo project to the Jazz Cafe this summer.

Renowned oud player and composer, Adnan Joubran’s compelling career has spanned the globe from Palestine to Paris, New York and back. Hailing from a family synonymous with the oud, Adnan grew up in a fourth generation family of oud makers and players.

Joining his two older brothers in 2005 to form the now iconic Le Trio Joubran, the Trio have gone on to release award-winning albums, and compose for numerous films and documentaries, such as the Oscar-nominated ‘Five Broken Cameras’. 

Nearly a decade later, Adnan marked the launch of his anticipated solo career in 2014 with his debut album ‘Borders Behind’. Whilst paying homage to the heritage of the oud, his journey takes him beyond the traditional music, creating a unity of compositions and modern sounds to create a new musical landscape. This cunning new sound has seen him open for international artists such as Ibrahim Maalouf and Rodrigo & Gabriela. 

For this pulsing show, Adnan has followed his steadfast passion to propose something different and compelling incorporating Indian, flamenco, jazz and classical influences; it is his musical fingerprint, a complex yet inviting modern arrangement. Ranging from dark and dramatic, to cinematic, Borders Behind gives space to new classical compositions, stunning improvisation and an innovative meeting of the classical cello and the contemporary oud.  

Performing a quartet format, Adnan will be joined by:

The Sudanese-London collective, The Scorpios open Grand Junction’s Summer Sessions with an electrifying night of funk-infused afrobeat.

Blending Arabic rhythms and guitar with raw Eastern funk and Western jazz, the 10-piece collective have created a mesmerising signature sound that is truly unique.

Alongside playing their classics, The Scorpios will debut songs from their highly anticipated new album recorded at Abbey Road Studios.

Summer Sessions has gone on sale at a reduced 50% capacity, ahead of the possibility of reopening to full audiences on 21 June, subject to government guidance. Safety measures will be in place, including one-way systems to ensure a safe flow of visitors and sanitiser stations. Visitors are required to wear face coverings, unless exempt.

MARSM UK and SOAS Concert Series present: 20 Years of Palestinian Hip Hop – In Conversation with Tamer Nafar and Mahmood Jrere. 

*This event is in conjunction with #MASRMDigital’s Music Film of the Month, ‘Slingshot Hip Hop’ is streaming for free from April 05-19.*

Join us as we look back at the fascinating trajectory of hip hop in Palestine, the beginnings of the alternative music scene, and the changes that accompanied the music in the last two decades. We will be exploring the spaces of performance, creative tools available for artists, the role of social media, and the evolution of the music scene through a lively discussion and insights from two of the most established Palestinian artists, Tamer Nafar and Mahmood Jrere.

Working together since the late 1990s, Tamer and Mahmood were two of the founding members of the iconic rap trio DAM, the first Palestinian hip hop crew and among the first to shape rap in Arabic. Struck by the uncanny resemblance of the reality of the streets in a Tupac video to the streets in their own neighborhood in Lyd, the trio were inspired to tell their stories through hip hop. In 2015, the band was officially joined by Palestinian musician, composer and artist Maysa Daw. 

Mahmood Jrere 

As well as his involvement in DAM, Mahmood Jrere is also an independent artist, music entrepreneur, and the co-founder of the Palestine Music Expo. Mahmood released his debut album Rhythm of the Tribe in 2016, and the past year saw him release four singles.

Tamer Nafar 

The leader and founding member of DAM, Tamer Nafar is also an independent artist, actor, screenwriter and social activist. He released a stream of DIY and collaborative productions in 2020, including the tongue-in-cheek ‘Ba’do Fi Roh (Still Got Soul)’.

Jacqueline Reem Salloum’s award-winning documentary ‘Slingshot Hip Hop’ chronicles the birth of hip hop in Palestine, following the lives and dreams of some of the pioneering artists at the forefront of its musical movement.

Braiding together the stories of young Palestinians living in Gaza, the West Bank and Palestine 48, the film spotlights the power of hip hop as a tool to surmount divisions imposed by occupation and social injustice. From internal checkpoints and segregation walls to gender norms and generational differences, this is the story of young artists breaking through the borders that separate them and fighting the constructs that alienate them.

Premiering in 2008 at Sundance Film Festival, the film features artists such as the veteran hip hop trio DAM, pioneering rapper Mahmood Shalabi, one of the first female rappers Abeer Al Zinati and Gaza’s PR, and sees the young-faced, ambitious rappers paving the way to cement Palestine as a musical and cultural powerhouse of the region – taking their messages and demands for equality and justice to a global audience by conquering the stage.

About the Director:

Jacqueline Reem Salloum is an artist and filmmaker with Palestinian and Syrian roots. Her multi-media based artwork focuses on documenting histories and memories of people that have been fragmented by displacement and exile.

Bringing the stage to the comfort of your living room, Comfort and Courage is a season of music, poetry and discussion performed live from the neo-gothic St Mary Magdalene’s church – and live streamed for online audiences.  As the pandemic shines a spotlight on injustices and the effect on our mental health, in Comfort and Courage, artists and political voices explore how they balance emotional well-being with creative expression, and share what gives them comfort, and the courage to speak out.

An arresting story of love and family, stardom and music.

Hedi Jouini, known as the “Frank Sinatra of Tunisia” is the most popular musical star in the country’s history and a celebrated singer, composer and oud player across the Arabic-speaking world. His long lasting career, that began in the 1930s, spanned almost five decades, struck at the heart of the post-colonial social and political upheaval of Tunisia. To this day, Jouini’s music inspires both revolutionaries and conservatives alike and has been an influential soundtrack to their ongoing search for identity in the wake of the Arab Revolutions.

But why did he keep his fame hidden from his family? What dark secrets did he keep from the nation that worshipped him? ‘The Man Behind the Microphone’ reveals the incredible story behind a man and his music, and offers fascinating insight into Tunisia’s cultural evolution. The film builds a profound portrait of the godfather of Tunisian music – father to a nation, but not always to his family.
